We've been celebrating Valentine's Day for centuries

Valentine's Day has its roots in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15. However, Pope Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be Saint Valentine's Day. There were multiple Saint Valentines in history, but the day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, the priest signed a letter to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and healed from blindness, “from your Valentine.” This phrase is still used today and epitomizes the spirit of the holiday.
